Leadership is a non-coercive style of leading people, where one person sets the direction, vision, or goals, and others naturally follow. A leader shows others the way and helps them achieve the agreed-upon goals through positive stimuli, such as motivation and inspiration.
A key characteristic of leadership is voluntary followership. This means people follow the leader of their own free will because they share the vision and find the leader inspiring. The leader motivates them to work better and achieve better results. They do not follow out of fear or the threat of punishment, for example: “I have to obey, otherwise I’ll lose my job / won’t get a bonus / become the black sheep of the company / they’ll be angry at me,” etc. Leadership does not work this way.
Manager vs. leader
The terms manager and leader are often confused today. A manager is someone responsible for running a business, team, or department. Their main tasks include task allocation, planning, monitoring plan fulfillment, strategic and operational planning, and profit generation.
In contrast, a leader focuses on people and their needs. Their role is to motivate, support, inspire, and show others the way. They help others grow and develop, contributing to achieving set goals or the optimal results of the entire organization.
It is said that managerial skills can be learned and acquired through external stimuli, whereas a leader must grow internally. Therefore, a leader and a manager may or may not be the same person.
Developing your leadership skills
Becoming a successful leader is a continuous journey, not a one-time achievement. It requires self-reflection, learning from both successes and failures, and actively seeking feedback from your team. Leaders who invest in their personal growth, whether through courses, mentorship, or reading, are better equipped to inspire and guide others. Remember, leadership is as much about listening and understanding as it is about making decisions. The more you practice empathy, communication, and adaptability, the stronger your influence will become, and the more willingly people will follow your vision.
The impact of a leader on team success
A strong leader not only guides the team but also shapes its culture and work environment. By setting a clear vision, encouraging collaboration, and recognizing individual contributions, a leader creates a sense of purpose and belonging. Teams led by effective leaders tend to be more motivated, innovative, and resilient in the face of challenges. Ultimately, a leader’s influence can determine not only the achievement of goals but also the long-term satisfaction and growth of each team member.
