The need to educate employees is an important indicator in human resource management. Human capital is a key factor in a company’s competitiveness, so businesses look for ways to encourage employee development, which in turn supports the growth of the company. In practice, we encounter a wide range of training methods, from well-known approaches such as job rotation to modern development techniques like neuro-linguistic programming. In general, training methods can be divided into those that take place within the organization and those that occur outside the workplace. There are many ways to train employees, so here are some of the most important ones.
E-learning
One of the basic methods of employee development is e-learning, which uses modern electronic tools for training. Employees acquire specific knowledge, usually via the company intranet, in a short timeframe. This is a widely used method that focuses on self-directed learning.
Job rotation
A popular method, especially in large companies, is job rotation. This simple approach allows employees to experience a variety of tasks across several departments. Employees are temporarily moved to different teams, where they gain knowledge and practical experience. This gives them a comprehensive overview of the company and makes their work more effective. Additionally, job rotation increases employee motivation, reduces workplace frustration, and helps prevent monotony.
Coaching
Coaching is an internal training method. Its principle is simple: an employee is assigned a coach who supports their development. Coaching is a long-term relationship that adapts flexibly to the employee’s current needs. The goal is to guide the employee toward the desired performance so that they can handle tasks independently in the future.
Mentoring
Mentoring is often confused with coaching. In mentoring, an employee receives systematic support from a more experienced person. The mentor does not have to be a superior – it can also be someone from outside the organization. Mentors contribute to the overall development of the employee, and the relationship is often informal.
Assessment center
This is a diagnostic and training method also used in employee selection. It is based on observing behavior in simulated situations. Assessment centers reveal how an employee handles stress and approaches problem-solving. They also help identify weaknesses and provide insights for improvement.
Development centrum
Development centers are similar to assessment centers but are more comprehensive. Employees go through a series of model situations, which often include professional psychodiagnostics. This method serves as a foundation for creating employee development plans. Unlike assessment centers, development centers are forward-looking and focus on skills that will be required in the future.
MBA studies
MBA studies represent a distinct area of employee development. They are a form of external education aimed at deepening practical knowledge in a specific field. MBA programs are increasingly popular in Czech companies, as they provide employees with in-depth knowledge and international perspectives that are highly valuable today.
