A successful manager must deliver great results, be able to lead and listen to people, stay constantly informed, and also admit mistakes and correct them in time. Managing all of these things at once is undoubtedly challenging, but we bring you several tips that may help.

Value your subordinates’ opinions

What good is an employee who meets financial targets but drives away talented staff who could help the company grow further in the future? The ability to lead your team is just as important as generating profit.

Employees are often the most valuable asset of any company, so treat them accordingly. The final decision is always yours, but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t involve them in the decision-making process. Ask for their opinions, give them space to express themselves, and don’t hesitate to agree if you are convinced of their point. When even junior employees see that their perspective matters, they feel like a real part of the team and are more motivated to achieve their tasks.

Trust your team

If you constantly stand over your employees’ shoulders, watching every mouse movement, it will likely stress them out. Allow them to be creative and show what they can do. Everyone has their own work style, and just because you’re the manager doesn’t mean only your way is the right one.

Don’t do work that doesn’t require you

Your time is valuable, so delegate tasks that don’t require your personal attention. Of course, make sure you don’t overload them with tasks for months ahead at the expense of other important daily responsibilities. Delegating tasks also shows trust, which can act as an effective motivator.

Set ambitious but realistic goals

When setting the goals you need to achieve, base them on the SMART method. According to it, the result you want to reach should be Specific, clearly defined so that every team member knows what is expected; Measurable, using an appropriate parameter; Accepted by the responsible person; Realistic, meaning achievable; and it should have a Timed deadline by which it must be accomplished.

Stay informed

Even if you are no longer a regular employee, try to stay constantly informed. Keep track of what is new in your industry and occasionally remind yourself of the main duties of your subordinates. For example, if you are the head of the sales department, try to close a deal from time to time, because only then will you stay sharp and be able to advise your people and show how they could proceed as well.

Do not hesitate to praise your people

A proper boss must have authority over subordinates, and there is probably no doubt about that. However, if this authority comes purely from fear of them, it is definitely not good. If someone in your team achieves a significant success, and praise them and congratulate them – preferably in front of other employees so that they also see that you value their work and that if they try hard enough, they can rise in your eyes as well.

If, on the other hand, something goes wrong, address it in private. It is definitely not necessary to burden anyone else with the problem. Moreover, acting otherwise could cause colleagues to point fingers at them and expose them to unnecessary pressure, which would negatively affect their performance.

Constantly look for ways to improve

Even if you achieve the greatest success in your managerial position, you should not rest on your laurels. Celebrate it, reward yourself, but also remember that to be able to repeat it in the future, you will need to move a bit further. Try to automate all routine processes as much as possible so that you do not waste time on them unnecessarily. Be lazy enough that even five clicks on the computer feel like too much, especially when there is a way to achieve the same result with just two.

Every decision can be changed

Stubbornly sticking to a decision that initially seemed correct, but which further circumstances showed was not, just to save face and avoid showing uncertainty, is obviously wrong. We are all human and make mistakes. If you properly explain your change of position to your subordinates, the vast majority of them will understand.
