We all know it – our heads are full of information and problems, anything in the room can distract us, and we constantly jump from one task to another. Even more so when we have things waiting that we have been putting off for a long time – an unpleasant work email, a long school essay, or even just cleaning the kitchen. Focusing on a single task can often be challenging, especially if you have been working from home lately, not interacting with people, and often getting tempted by social media or TV. So how can you really concentrate? We have prepared a few tips to help you improve your focus and show you how to concentrate better.

1. Take regular breaks

Working for hours on end is exhausting, both mentally and physically. For better focus, always take short breaks – just five minutes every hour is enough. Walk around the apartment, read an interesting article, make yourself a good cup of coffee, or have a short chat with someone. Even a small break refreshes your mind and gives you new energy for work. Not to mention that a pause allows your mind to rest, giving you a fresh perspective on a problem and helping you solve it more efficiently.

2. The foundation of focus? A tidy workspace

A messy desk = a messy mind. Leftover plates and coffee cups, scattered pencils and papers, tangled headphones, or messy cables – all of this will distract not only your eyes but also your brain. How to maintain attention? Tidy up your desk or even your entire workspace so you can focus solely on work and not worry about dishes or lack of space for your documents. It’s also worth preparing materials you’ll need for work in advance to avoid wasting time searching for them.

3. Don’t switch tasks

Once you start something, do not interrupt it. Even if a problem arises that you don’t feel like addressing at the moment, continue working. Why? In the future, you might spend tens of minutes or even hours just trying to remember where the problem was, and it will take you a long time to fully immerse yourself back into the task or field.

4. Plan your tasks

To maximize focus, it helps to create a schedule of tasks at the start of the day. You can also plan how much time you want to spend on each task. This way, you’ll know exactly what to do right from the morning and won’t waste time searching for new tasks or switching between activities.

5. Find a quiet place

If you need to finish an important task, submit a school assignment, or meet a deadline, find the quietest place possible. Close the office or study room door, or at home, go to a room where no one will disturb you. If necessary, lock the door, put up a “do not disturb” sign, and give yourself several hours of uninterrupted work.

6. Go outside

If you feel your brain can’t handle the workload anymore, put on your shoes, grab a jacket, and go for a short walk. Whether you walk around your house, take the dog out, or just stroll in the park, fresh air is excellent for memory and concentration.

7. Reward yourself

How to improve your focus? You can also approach it simply by allowing yourself a reward after completing a task. Whether it’s a piece of chocolate cake or a long bath, a reward will motivate you to do your work as well and as quickly as possible.

8. Turn off your mobile phone

And one last important tip. If you are working on a computer, in the office, or anywhere you have your mobile phone handy, turn it off. Or at least put it out of reach so you are not tempted to check notifications, the latest Instagram posts, or chat with friends. Of course, this only applies if you don’t need your phone for work.
